Working with the staff of Praxis, he developed and taught service learning courses in Costa Rica and Nicaragua from 1999 until 2014. His doctoral research at Princeton Theological Seminary focused on the impact of these trips on the faith formation of student participants. His research on best (and worst) practices in short-term missions has been published in The Christian Century, Intersections Magazine and The Journal of College and Character.
